Tampa has a lot of things, but an endless supply of nearby beaches is not one of them. You can make the 40-minute drive to beach paradise in Clear Water, but you end up losing part of your day due to travel. If you’re looking to stay in Tampa, here are your best options for beaches and getting in the water.
Getting to the Beach
Ben T. Davis Beach
7740 W Courtney Campbell Cswy, Tampa, FL 33607
If you're vacationing in Tampa and looking for a close-by beach with powdery white sand and calm water, head over to Davis Beach. This is the closest beach to downtown Tampa and the locals' favorite tailgate spot. Davis offers ideal proximity to the airport for travelers who value efficiency. For those looking to work up a sweat, Tuesday evenings and Saturday mornings are often populated by local volleyball players. This is one of the best spots in town to watch the sunset and is located adjacent to the new Courtney Campbell Trail, a four-mile biking and pedestrian bridge.
Davis Island Beach Picnic Island
Davis Islands Beach Tampa, FL 33606
Davis Island is located right outside of downtown Tampa. If you’re vacationing with your dog or just love dogs, this is a good spot to hit. Although the beach itself is off limits to dogs, most of the area is dedicated to being a dog park where canines can run off-leash. Davis Island has fluffy white sand and little-to-no rocks. Anchored boats sometimes crowd the beach in front of this sandy spot, making it difficult for swimming very far.
Picnic Island
A hidden gem in South Tampa, this spacious park is the perfect place to bring the family to relax or have a picnic. Children can enjoy the sand playground and beach. Picnic Island Park offers a sand volleyball court and a disc golf course. A smaller dog beach is located near the boat and pier.

Just 25 minutes from Tampa and close to Busch Gardens, you’ll find the Hillsborough River. Head out on a two-hour or full-day tour with Canoe Escape. Travel through 16,000 acres of wildlife preserve. You’ll paddle down “alligator alley,” where dozens of gators, including some 11-footers, sunbathe on logs and dive into the river from the river’s banks. Don’t plan on getting out of the canoe! Tour guides also point out snakes, turtles, river otters, fish, and birds of prey as they relax in their natural habitat. Hourly rentals are also available.
