If you’re looking for some fun and relaxing beach activity, Martha’s Vineyard is the perfect place to dip your toes in the sand and catch some sun. From the rougher water of the island’s south side to the more placid beaches of the island’s north side, let’s take a look at the many public and permit-only beaches on the island by town/area.
Aquinnah
Aquinnah Public Beach (also known as Moshup Beach) features soft white sand and transparent water thaa ast has made it featured as one of the top beaches in the US. For those that want a full body tan, there is also a clothing-optional area at the Gay Head Nude Beach.
Also located in Aquinnah is Lobsterville Beach, a popular spot among birdwatchers and anglers alike.
Chilmark
Menemsha Public Beach is open to the public and is known as the best spot to watch a sunset on Martha’s Vineyard as well as catch some stunning views of Cuttyhunk and the other Elizabeth Islands.
Two other beaches in the area, Lucy Vincent Beach and the Squibnocket Beach, are only open to Chilmark residents and renters only.
Edgartown
One of Edgartown’s most popular beaches, Katama Beach (known as South Beach) is a popular destination for shell fishing and body surfing. Because Katama Beach is a barrier beach, you can enjoy the rough surf on one side and a calmer pond on the other.
