No car? No problem! Martha’s Vineyard offers numerous activities that don’t require a vehicle to access. The ferry from Falmouth drops you off with numerous transportation options on Martha’s Vineyard such as taxi, car rental, and more, but it can be more fun to explore the island on foot, by bicycle, or by bus.
Biking around the Island
Perhaps one of the most popular activities on Martha’s Vineyard is to go by bike. Taking a bicycle on the ferry to the island is vastly cheaper than bringing a vehicle, especially when you factor in parking fees and the fare it costs each way. By design, Martha’s Vineyard is bicycle-friendly, featuring over 44 miles of bike paths around the island. Going by bike between the towns of Martha’s Vineyard is also convenient, with only 3 miles between Vineyard Haven and Oak Bluffs, and an just additional 5 miles to Edgartown. Best of all, the buses I’m on the island allow for bike transport so you can take a break to go long distances or avoid the up-island destinations of Aquinnah and Chilmark.
Go on a Walking Tour
Martha’s Vineyard has a rich cultural history and folklore that lends itself to casual strolling and walking. Luckily, many companies offer walking tours to highlight these spots led by expert guides. The following are just some of the many organized walking tours on the island:
- Ghosts, Gossip and Downright Scandal Walking Tours
- Literary Edgartown Walking Tour
- African-American Heritage Trail Walking Tour
Hit the Beach by Bus
The public transportation system on Martha’s Vineyard, Vineyard Transit Authority (V.T.A.) ,is extensive and inexpensive, making it a solid choice when you’ve chosen to leave your car behind. Best of all, you can combine the routes with hitting many of the island public beaches without having to pay exorbitant parking fees.
Some of the most bus-accessible beaches include:
- - Aquinnah Public Beach (also known as Moshup Beach) is a popular beach and even has clothing-optional sunbathing at Gay Head Nude Beach
- - Lobsterville Beach, a popular spot among birdwatchers and anglers alike.
- - Menemsha Public Beach is known as the best spot to watch a sunset on Martha’s Vineyard
- - Katama Beach (known as South Beach) is a popular destination for shell fishing and body surfing.
